Development tool for football
There is a long list of world class footballers who attribute a significant part of their development to Futsal.
Lionel Messi, Ronaldo (El Fenomeno), Ronaldinho, Neymar and many others from South America grew up playing the game.
Christiano Ronaldo, Xavi, Iniesta, Bruno Fernandez and many more from Europe all speak about the role it has played in their development.
This is largely due to the constraints of the game:
Playing to lines rather than walls ensures the importance of movement is paramount
The confined court space demands certainty of control and technique.
The specially weighted Futsal ball encourages a fast game principally played on the ground
A prohibition on passing back to the goalkeeper once they have already touched the ball in a move makes for a very tactical game to significantly improve awareness and decision making.
Various other rules (including use of a stop clock and punishing all fouls after 5 have been made with a penalty) eliminate a lot of time wasting and disruptive play associated with football to encourage a much more free flowing game.
This combined with basic maths (players are expected to have approx. 6 times more ball interactions playing Futsal than football) ensures the game is a hotbed for the development of young footballers.
It is also never too late in a young players development to benefit from playing Futsal. Max Kilman of Wolves in the Premier League is a very recent example of a player that used Futsal as a springboard to the top level of football.
Sport in its own right
Whether or not players aspire to play at the top level of football, Futsal offers a career playing an alternative sport in its own right. With World Cups, European Championships, domestic leagues and even the UEFA Futsal Champions League, there is a world of possibility within Futsal itself.
With 8.498 attending the 2021 Futsal World Cup final to watch Portugal beat Argentina to the title, and the top flight in England shown on BT Sport, there are significant opportunities within the sport.
Aberdeen Futsal Academy
As it stands, there is little in the way of a platform for players in the Grampian region to access the benefits above. That is why the Aberdeen Futsal Academy are working hard to build infrastructure to ensure the area has access to all of the potential that Futsal has to offer.
